Scoring Duo Leads Warriors to Win Over Knights

BOX SCORE

PORTLAND, Ore.
– Senior Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) and sophomore Amanda Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) each scored second half goals in helping lead Corban's women's soccer team to a victory over Warner Pacific, 2-0, Saturday night at Portland Christian High School.

Just over 24 hours after opening the '09 Cascade Collegiate Conference season against the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Concordia, Corban rebounded with a convincing two-goal victory over Warner Pacific under the lights of the Rose City.

After a scoreless 62-plus minutes, Matthews put home the eventual game-winner off an assist from fellow senior Marissa Walter (Elk Grove, Calif.). The scoring play began with a corner kick off the foot of Walter onto Matthews, who unleashed a shot from six yards out into the back of the net for her third goal this season.

Less than 10 minutes later, Mendenhall notched her third goal of the season when she teamed with junior Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.) to extend Corban's lead to two goals. Laughlin began the play by sending a shot into the box that was unsuccessfully cleared away by the Knights' defense. Without hesitation, Mendenhall rocketed a shot from 12 yards out into the back of the goal for the game's final score.

Senior goalkeepeer Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) registered two saves on the night for Corban en route to picking up her second shutout this season. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific's Lacey Golden recorded a game-high five saves in suffering the loss.

The Warriors out-shot their opponent 16-4, including a 11-1 advantage over the game's final 45 minutes. Warner Pacific tallied four shots, as Riley Murray and Elissa Coutin each registered two shots.

With tonight's win, Corban improves to 4-5-2 overall and 1-1-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Warner Pacific remains winless at 0-7-2 overall and 0-2-0 in CCC action. The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, October 3rd, when they travel south to Eugene to take on Northwest Christian beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Mike Kelly Field.
