Warriors Upset No. 29-Ranked William Jessup

BOX SCORE

ROCKLIN, Calif.
– Senior Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute, as Corban's women's soccer team upset the NAIA's No. 29-ranked William Jessup, 1-0, Monday afternoon at Mahany Field.

The Warriors concluded a two-game, three-day road trip in Northern California on Labor Day, as Corban snapped a two-game losing streak following Saturday's 2-0 setback to nationally-ranked Holy Names in Oakland.

"It was a good game," commented fourteenth-year head coach Marty Ziesemer. "We played hard and it is nice to end the trip with a victory."

After a scoreless 80-plus minutes with neither team being able to crack the goal, Matthews broke through the host Warriors' defense and scored her first goal since September 25, 2007. Matthews' first score in almost two seasons turned out to be the game-winning goal and helped Corban move back to its winning ways.

Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) played all 90 minutes between the pipes for the Warriors and recorded a game-high tying four saves, while William Jessup's net-minder Lindsey Cesena equaled Bassett's save total with four of her own.

With the victory, Corban evens its record at 2-2-1 versus William Jessup's 0-2 mark to open its season. The Warriors will return to action on Friday, September 11th, when they take part in the Corban Classic against nationally-ranked Carroll College beginning at 4:00 p.m. in Salem.
