Seniors Shine in Windy Win Over Mountaineers

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– On Senior Day, a pair of fourth-year Warriors shined in the final game of their career on Warrior Field en route to helping lead Corban's women's soccer team to a 5-1 victory over Eastern Oregon on a windy Saturday in the Capital City.

Playing in a blustery 15-20 miles per hour breeze from the southeast, Corban played with the wind at their back in the first half and took full advantage. The Warrior offense struck quickly, as senior Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) scored a mere 45 seconds into the game with an unassisted one-timer that found the upper right corner. Continuing the press into Eastern Oregon's territory, freshman Audrey Sullivan (Puyallup, Wash.) took a through ball from sophomore Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) and beat the EOU keeper in a one-on-one to score the eventual game-winner in the game's 5th minute.

Corban kept the ball on the Mountaineers half of the field throughout the first half, breaking through once again in the 24th minute on Tsugawa's one timer to the lower left corner set up by an elusive pass through the EOU defense by senior Miranda O'Connor (Gladstone, Ore.). Tsugawa netted her team-leading 10th goal of the season with that score. The Warriors would net one more first-half goal in the 34th minute, as Hanson sent a through ball to freshman Abigail Van Hoogen (Boise, Idaho), who rifled a shot to the upper right corner to beat the Eastern Oregon keeper for her first collegiate goal.

The Warriors took a 4-0 advantage into the half, as the wind helped Corban out shoot the Mountaineers 7-2 in the first frame. Freshman Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.) only needed to make one save to keep Eastern Oregon off the scoreboard after 45 minutes.

EOU started the second half strong with the wind now on their side, quickly closing the margin in shots in the early minutes of the second frame. The Mountaineers would capitalize on their offensive pressure when Amanda Swenson scored in the 56th minute. Swenson slipped by the Warrior defense and fired a shot into the upper right corner on a set up by Mauriana Gonzalez.

Corban would weather the Eastern Oregon onslaught, eventually pushing back into Mountaineer territory despite playing against the wind. EOU would have several chances on long goal kicks that flew up field into Corban territory, while the Warriors manufactured several near scores of their own on breakaways by Sullivan and fellow freshman Audrey Correa (Riverside, Calif.). Corban would match Eastern Oregon's second-half goal in the 75th minute, as Sullivan capitalized by taking freshman Tera McDonough's (Boise, Idaho) pass on a breakaway, beating the keeper with a gentle rolling shot into the right corner of the net for her second goal of the day and eighth of the season.

Beattie recorded a game-high five saves in a complete-game effort between the pipes to take the Warrior win. Eastern Oregon used two keepers in the contest, as Chantal Schefers played the first 45 minutes before Kailey Moss took over for the final period. Moss registered three second-half saves, while the EOU defense contributed a team save.

With the win, Corban adds to its best start in program history improving to 13-3-0 overall and 5-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Eastern Oregon falls to 4-7-1 overall and 4-4-0 in league games. The Warriors will travel to the state of Washington next weekend for their final road trip and last two games of the regular season beginning next Friday, October 29th, against Evergreen State in a game scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. in Olympia.
