Warriors Win 1st Salem Collegiate Cup Challenge

FINAL RESULTS

SALEM, Ore.
– In the first annual Salem Collegiate Cup Challenge between Corban and cross town rival Willamette, the Warriors' men's golf team earned a convincing victory, 29-13, in the Ryder Cup-style match played Tuesday at Creekside Golf Club.

In the 18-hole match that featured a possible 14 points per foursome, each team played six holes of alternate shot, six holes of best ball, and six holes of one-on-one match play. Each school would earn one point for alternate shot, one point for best ball, and one point per hole in match play.

"It was good to get a competitive round in at Creekside before our conference match on Monday," said senior team captain Steve Landis (Gladstone, Ore.). "It was fun to play in a different setting than just a normal practice, even though that's what it felt like today. I'm really proud of the guys for being able to rely on each other in their groups. Today has helped us to gel as a team before a big weekend."

The opening match featured Corban juniors Joey Ziogas (Salem, Ore.) and Michael May (Salem, Ore.) versus Willamette's Jacob Simonson and Connor Boyd. In the alternate shot and best ball formats, Corban would earn both points before heading into the final six holes of the match. May defeated Simonson, 4 and 2, while Ziogas and Boyd split with three points each. The final point tally for the opening match was Corban 9, Willamette 5.

Match #2 featured Corban senior Jared Rust (Palo Cedro, Calif.) and junior Chris Dudley (Boise, Idaho) versus Willamette's Daniel Rehm and Dylan Johnson. The Warriors would earn both points in alternate shot and best ball format, while Dudley defeated Rehm, 5 and 1, and Johnson picked up Willamette's lone victory, 4 and 2, against Rust. At the end of the second match, Corban would earned another 9-5 victory.

In the third and final match, Landis and junior Joey Duwe (Kingston, Wash.) would team up to go head-to-head against Willamette's Kyle Flowers and Paul Shoji. For the third straight match, Corban would earn the opening two points thanks to victories in both the alternate shot and best ball format. Over the match play holes, Landis and Duwe would defeat Flowers and Shoji by identical scores of 4.5 and 1.5. Overall, Corban would defeat Willamette in the final match by the tally of 11 to 3.

The big winners for each team were Dudley for Corban with six points and Johnson for Willamette with four points. All six Warriors scored at least three points, while the Bearcats got more than two points from only Johnson, Boyd, and Simonson.

Corban will return to regular stroke play on Monday, October 11th, at the 36-hole Corban Invitational being played at Creekside Golf Club beginning with an 8:00 a.m. shot gun start.
