McDonough Scores, Warriors Fall to No. 1 Cavs

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– Freshman Tera McDonough (Boise, Idaho) scored in the 35th minute Saturday, as Corban's women's soccer team became the first team all season to grab a lead against the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Concordia. Unfortunately, the top-ranked Cavaliers came from behind and remain unbeaten thanks to a 2-1 win on Warrior Field.

"I am pleased with the way that we played today against the nation's top-ranked team," said fifteenth-year head coach Marty Ziesemer. "We battled and played well except for a five-minute stretch when Concordia capitalized."

After a scoreless opening 34-plus minutes in which Corban looked like the top-ranked team in the country, McDonough put the Warriors on the board with her fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute. After a scrum in front of the goal in which McDonough got off a shot that rebounded off of Concordia's keeper, the first-year Warrior deposited the ball into the back of the net and sent Corban and the hundreds of fans in attendance into a frenzy.

The Warriors would hold their one-goal lead through halftime before Concordia got on the board in the 51st minute via a penalty kick off the foot of Kelton McFadden for the equalizer. Prior to the penalty kick, Corban's defense was attempting to let the ball cross over the end line for a goal kick only to have a Cavalier attacker steal the ball and then elude a Warrior defender, who was called for a foul in the box. McFadden would step up to the penalty spot and rifled a shot into the upper right corner just beyond the out-stretched arm of Corban's keeper.

Just over three minutes later, Concordia would get the eventual game-winner from Jackie Hendrickson after she received a pass from Tahlia O'Loughlin. The scoring play would begin with O'Loughlin sending a pass towards Hendrickson, who one-timed the ball into the upper left corner for the game-winner.

The nation's No. 1-ranked Cavaliers' defense would hold Corban to only one shot in the second half after the Warriors out shot Concordia, 6-3, over the opening 45 minutes of play.

Freshman goalkeeper Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.) would register a game-high tying four saves, while Concordia's Tori Talbutt snagged an identical four saves en route to keeper the Cavaliers unbeaten.

With today's result, Corban falls to 10-3-0 overall and 2-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Concordia improves to 12-0-1 overall and remains perfect in league games at 4-0-0. The Warriors will return to the field on Saturday, October 16th, against Northwest Christian and former Corban player turned Beacon head coach Katie Casebeer beginning at 2:30 p.m. on Warrior Field.
