BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – In heroic late-game fashion, sophomore
Emily Tsugawa (Gladstone, Ore.) led Corban to a 2-1 win over cross-town rival Willamette Wednesday night at Sparks Field to help extend the Warriors' season-opening winning streak to two games.
Tsugawa's 87th minute goal broke a 1-1 deadlock, giving the Warriors bragging rights and the victory in the latest chapter of the Capital Cup.
Opening the day, Corban's persistent offense moved the ball into Willamette territory early and often. In the 13th minute, the Warriors were awarded a corner kick with senior
Katie Hanson (Salem, Ore.) servicing a pass into the box that found the head of freshman
Rileigh Mankin (Manteca, Calif.), who deposited the ball in the back of the net for a 1-0 Warrior advantage.
Fifteen minutes later, Corban had a chance to tally a second goal in the 30th minute on its second corner kick of the night. Freshman
Emily Boudreau (Emerald Hills, Calif.) set and rocketed the ball into the box, as senior
Erin Stokes (Ephrata, Wash.) got a piece of the ball but sent it wide therefore ending the threat.
In the second half, Corban came out firing via freshman
Tera McDonough's
(Boise, Idaho) shot on goal that was denied by Willamette's goal keeper Nicole Price.
The Bearcats gained a momentary head of steam and pushed the ball up-field, inching closer to a potential equalizer. That moment came in the 50th minute when Willamette sophomore Ariel Wilson was brought down in Corban's box therefore awarding Willamette a penalty kick. A moment later, Wilson slammed home the equalizer despite the efforts of diving the Warriors' freshman goalkeeper
Alexis Beattie (Brea, Calif.).
The ball would change hands at a frantic pace with both teams looking for the winning score for the rest of the half. Corban finally broke the deadlock in the 87th minute when senior
Genessa Neeser (Pocatello, Idaho) passed the ball to a streaking Tsugawa who broke for the goal. Tsugawa's fancy footwork and a well placed ball from 18 yards out gave Corban the eventual game-winner, 2-1.
In goal, Beattie played the full 90 minutes, facing four shots, grabbing a save en route to picking up her first collegiate victory. On the other hand, Willamette would split time between the pipes as Kelli Gano played the opening 45 minutes registering one save on nine shots before turning things over to Price for the second half.
Tsugawa and Mankin both tallied their second goals of the season and share the team-lead respectively.
With the win, Corban improves to 2-0-0 on the season and Willamette drops its season opening contest. The Warriors are back on the pitch this Saturday, September 4th, when they host NCAA Division III member Linfield at 1:00 p.m. at Warrior Field.
