BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – Judy Garland said it best when she played Dorothy in
The Wizard of Oz, "There's no place like home, there's no place like home, there's no place like home."
Returning home for the first time in almost a month, Corban's women's soccer team showed just how much the Warriors enjoy playing on their own turf taking care of the visiting Geoducks of Evergreen, 4-0, in a Cascade Collegiate Conference game Thursday on Warrior Field.
In five home games so far this season, Corban (6-5-1, 2-1-0 CCC) has allowed just two goals in 470 minutes of action on Warrior Field. On the other hand, Evergreen (1-6-0, 0-2-0 CCC) has scored only two goals away from Olympia that includes a 1-0 victory against George Fox earlier this year in Newberg.
Senior
Audrey Sullivan had a hand in each of Corban's four goals, as she scored twice and handed out a pair of assists. Senior
Tera McDonough and sophomore
Randi Donahue scored the Warriors' other two goals, as senior goalkeeper
Alexis Beattie registered two saves en route to picking up her second shutout of the season.
"We talked quite a bit about coming out and setting the tone early," said head coach
Marty Ziesemer. "I was pleased with how we accomplished that early on. Evergreen battled, but we were able to control the tempo and late in the game it was nice to see some quality goals."
Corban wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard, as Sullivan teamed with McDonough in the third minute on her team-leading eighth goal of the season. McDonough would begin the scoring play by sending a crossing pass from the far sideline onto Sullivan, who tapped home the game's opening shot into the back of the net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Just over eight minutes later, Sullivan would team with Donahue on her second goal of the year. In the 12th minute, Sullivan sent a crossing pass from left-to-right where Donahue was waiting and put the ball into the back of the net for a 2-0 Corban lead.
Corban would control the offensive flow throughout the opening half, as the Warriors registered six more shots (11-to-5) than Evergreen that included putting four of its first five shots on-target.
The second half would be a different story for the first 35 minutes, as Evergreen held an 8-to-6 advantage in shots but could not find the back of the net.
In the game's final ten minutes, Corban would score two more goals thanks to Sullivan's team-leading ninth goal of the year in the 82nd minute and McDonough's seventh score of the season just over two minutes later.
Sullivan would put the Warriors ahead by three goals at the 81:51 mark when she took a shot from 20 yards out and directed it into the upper right corner of the goal following a pass from freshman
Amber Lennier.
One hundred and twenty-two seconds later, McDonough took a pass from Sullivan and flicked an 18-yard shot into the upper left corner of the goal for the final tally of 4-0 at the 83:53 mark.
Evergreen's Kaitlin MacKenzie tallied a game-high three saves for the Geoducks in 90 minutes between the pipes.
Overall, Corban registered five more shots (18-to-13) than Evergreen with the Warriors putting seven shots on-target versus the Geoducks' three. In a physical game, Corban was whistled for 18 fouls compared to Evergreen's 10 with the Geoducks drawing a pair of yellow cards.
Corban will return to action on Saturday, October 12th, when they host the visiting Eagles of Northwest beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
"Now we have an important game on Saturday to focus on as it will be a challenging game and important one for postseason play," commented Ziesemer about Corban's game versus Northwest in two days.
