BOX SCORE
CALDWELL, Idaho – Senior
Audrey Sullivan scored a mere 44 seconds into the second half, as Corban's women's soccer team moved one step closer to clinching a spot in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament with a 1-0 victory over The College of Idaho Thursday afternoon at Simplot Stadium.
Corban (8-5-2, 4-1-1 CCC) and The College of Idaho (3-11-0, 1-6-0 CCC) played evenly throughout, as each team registered 15 total shots. The difference came in shots on goal, as the visiting Warriors put one more ball on target in the second half than the host Coyotes despite each team directing six shots within the frame of the goal during the game.
A scoreless first half would see The College of Idaho dominate play during the opening 15 minutes before Corban began to control the offensive flow for the final 30 minutes. The Warriors' first scoring opportunity came in the 25th minute when senior
Tera McDonough's shot ricocheted off the crossbar before being cleared off the line at the 24:50 mark.
Neither team would put much pressure on the opposing defense for the rest of the half with the Warriors registering nine shots versus C of I's seven, as the Yotes' goalkeeper was forced to make three saves compared to Corban's two.
The second half would begin with a bang, as Corban broke the scoreless tie thanks to Sullivan's team and conference-leading 11th goal of the season on an assist from McDonough in the 46th minute. McDonough began the play by sending a pass into the box to Sullivan, who collected a loose ball and then beat her defender to the right before lacing a low shot from six yards out into the right corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Sullivan's goal also put her over the 30-point mark for the third straight season, as she continues to add to her career goal and point totals cementing herself as the second-best player in program history behind former Warrior and Hall of Fame member KeriAnn Rumrey (2000-03).
Over the final 44-plus minutes, the game was an evenly matched contest with both teams challenging their opponent defensively. For Corban, senior goalkeeper
Alexis Beattie was up for the challenge despite being pulled from the game due to an injury in the 85th minute after registering her sixth and final save. C of I's Summer Jackson found herself in a one-on-one battle with Beattie at the 84:32 mark, as the fourth-year Warrior stonewalled Jackson before the two collided forcing Beattie to the sideline for the remainder of the game.
Beattie played the first 84-plus minutes registering all six saves for the Warriors before junior net-minder
Kaitlyn Mendenhall stood between the pipes for the final five-plus minutes and only saw one shot that went high of the goal. At the other end of the field, C of I's Melissa Holmes-Joseph equaled Beattie's defensive performance with a game-high tying six saves despite allowing the game's only goal.
Corban will close out its regular season road schedule on Saturday, October 26th, against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the EOU Soccer Complex in La Grande.
