LA GRANDE, Ore. – Thanks to a pair of second half goals by senior
Audrey Sullivan and sophomore
Randi Donahue, Corban's women's soccer team moved into second place in the Cascade Collegiate Conference and clinched a spot in the playoffs with a 2-1 victory over Eastern Oregon Saturday at the EOU Soccer Complex.
Corban (9-5-2, 5-1-1 CCC) scored its first goal in the 52nd minute before putting home the game-winner with just under 90 seconds left in regulation, while Eastern Oregon (8-4-1, 4-4-0 CCC) scored the only goal in the first half with a score in the 42nd minute.
Over the opening 40 minutes, neither team scored despite a golden opportunity by freshman
Allyson Irwin when her shot hit the crossbar with exactly five minutes on the clock before being cleared away by EOU's defense. Eastern Oregon would break the scoreless tie just over 60 seconds later when Mauriana Gonzalez netted her fifth goal of the season off an assist by Katherine Hood at the 41:06 mark to put the host Mountaineers ahead by a single goal heading into halftime.
In the first half, Corban registered four more shots (9-to-5) than Eastern Oregon with the Warriors putting three on target compared to the Mountaineers' one.
Less than seven minutes into the second half, Donahue would score the equalizer off an assist by Sullivan for her third goal of the season at the 51:27 mark that tied the game at 1-1.
With the game destined for overtime, Sullivan put home the game-winner at the 88:39 mark off an assist by Donahue for the final tally of 2-1. The game-winning score was set up following a save by junior goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Mendenhall a mere 19 seconds earlier that jump started the Warriors' attack that ended with Donahue finding a wide-open Sullivan in front of the net. Sullivan's team and conference-leading 12th goal of the season turned out to be her fifth game-winner of the year, as she leads the conference in that offensive category.
Mendenhall picked up her fourth win of the season thanks to a game-high tying four saves, while Eastern Oregon's Kailey Moss also tallied four saves on the afternoon.
Overall, Corban registered six more shots (16-to-10) than Eastern Oregon with both teams putting four on target. Each team earned three corner kicks in the game, while the Warriors were whistled for three more fouls (14-to-11).
Corban will return to action on Thursday, October 31st, against the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 3:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
