KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – After an 11-day layoff from regular season competition, Corban's women's soccer team opened its Cascade Collegiate Conference schedule with a come-from-behind win over Oregon Tech, 2-1, Thursday at Trevor Derrah Field.
With tonight's win, Corban improves to 5-4-1 overall and 1-0-0 in CCC play. The Warriors also extended their conference season-opening streak to two straight years with a victory. On the other hand, Oregon Tech falls to 3-6-1 overall and 0-2-0 in league games.
Oregon Tech would get on the scoreboard first thanks to a goal by Kylie Durant in the 26th minute, as she received a pass from Rebekah Nisbet and pocketed her first goal of the season. Nisbet would begin the scoring play by sending a long pass to Durant, who unleashed a shot from 30 yards out into the right corner of the goal to put the host Owls up by a single goal.
Despite winning the shot chart in the opening half by five shots (12-to-7), Corban could not find the back of the net with the Warriors going into halftime trailing for the first time in two-and-a-half games.
Just over twenty minutes into the second half, the senior duo of
Audrey Sullivan and
Emily Boudreau would team up for the equalizer in the 66th minute. Boudreau began the play by sending a pass into the box where Sullivan headed a shot into the back of the net from 10 yards out to knot the game at 1-1 at the 65:10 mark.
Ten minutes later, senior
Tera McDonough scored the game-winner when she unloaded a shot from 25 yards out into the top left corner at the 75:31 mark to put the Warriors ahead for good (2-1). A little over ten minutes after Sullivan took the team-lead in goals, McDonough would score her team-high tying fifth goal of the year that turned out to be her first game-winning score of the season.
Over the next six minutes, Oregon Tech would unleash five shots with three being on-target that forced Corban's goalkeeper to make a save and keep the Warriors ahead by a single goal. In the end, Corban would register the game's final two shots and held the host Owls without a shot over the final eight-plus minutes.
Senior
Alexis Beattie would stand between the pipes for Corban throughout the first half, as she made three saves before turning the ball over to junior
Kaitlyn Mendenhall for the final 45 minutes with the third-year Warrior tallying a team-high six saves. For Oregon Tech, Rebekah Matteri registered a game-high nine saves despite allowing both goals by Corban.
As a team, Corban registered four more shots (23-to-19) than Oregon Tech with the Hustlin' Owls putting one more shot on-frame (12-to-11). The visiting Warriors would earn six more corner kicks (8-to-2) than OIT with Corban being whistled for 11 fouls versus Oregon Tech's six.
Corban will continue its CCC-opening road trip on Saturday, October 5th, against Southern Oregon beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Ashland.
