BOX SCORE
SALEM, Ore. – On
Senior Recognition Day, Corban's women's soccer team gave the NAIA's No. 1-ranked Cavaliers of Concordia a challenge before falling 1-0 Saturday on Warrior Field.
Corban (10-6-2, 6-2-1 CCC) will host a Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament game later this week, but the Warriors need to wait for the result from today's Southern Oregon-Northwest game to find out who, when, and where the game will take place. Meanwhile, Concordia (15-1-1, 9-0-0 CCC) extended its winning streak to a conference-high 11-game winning streak and pushed its scoreless streak to just over 526 consecutive minutes.
After a scoreless 25-plus minutes, Concordia scored the eventual game-winning goal when Alex Blalock netted her seventh goal of the season on a combo assist by Bobbi Eckler and Hannah Scott. Scott would begin the scoring play by sending a pass along the far sideline to Eckler, who quickly one-timed a pass to Blalock in the box where she cracked a shot from 18 yards out into the back of the net to put the visiting Cavaliers ahead 1-0 at the 25:55 mark.
Just over 15 minutes later, Concordia had another scoring opportunity when Ariel Kanable's shot hit the cross bar before going over the end line at the 40:23 mark.
Corban's best scoring chances came in the 79th minute when senior
Audrey Sullivan had back-to-back shots blocked by a Concordia defender, while also unleashing a shot from 25 yards out at the 88:43 mark that ended up in the arms of Concordia's goalkeeper to thwart the Warriors' game-tying opportunities.
Senior
Alexis Beattie and junior
Kaitlyn Mendenhall split time between the pipes for Corban, as Beattie registered a pair of saves with Mendenhall tallying a game-high tying four saves. At the other end of the field, Concordia's Olivia Brock registered a game-high tying four saves en route to picking up the shutout.
Overall, Concordia registered five more shots (15-to-10) than Corban with the Cavaliers putting two more shots on goal (6-to-4) than the host Warriors. The two teams combined for 25 fouls, as Concordia earned seven more corner kicks (11-to-4) than Corban.
In a halftime ceremony, six seniors – Beattie,
Emily Boudreau, Sullivan,
Rileigh Mankin,
Tera McDonough, and
Michelle Clubb – were honored for their service to the program over the past four seasons. Since this group arrived on the scene in the fall of 2010, Corban has gone 48-25-3 and qualified for the playoffs twice that included a fourth place finish at the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament during their freshman season.
Corban will open the playoffs on Wednesday, November 6th, when the Warriors host No. 6-seed Oregon Tech beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field in Salem.
