Warriors Shut Out Bruins Behind Four Second Half Goals

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – Playing its second game in the past three days, Corban's women's soccer team showed no effects from Saturday's scoreless tie scoring six unanswered goals in a 6-0 victory over NCAA Division III member George Fox Monday on Warrior Field.

With today's win, Corban improves to 2-0-1 on the season and extends its season-opening shutout streak to 290 minutes. On the other hand, George Fox opens its season at 0-1-0 overall.

"This was a good win for us," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "The second half, we really wanted to increase our pressure. We did not feel that in the first half we were as hungry as we needed to be and we did not capitalize on some opportunities. The second half we came out and played really well and put a lot of pressure on them."

Senior Tera McDonough scored a pair of second half goals for the Warriors, while four other Corban players – sophomore Maria Dominguez, sophomore Katelyn Weaver, freshman Allyson Irwin, and freshman Karissa Stark – each added goals. Senior Audrey Sullivan tallied a pair of assists, while senior Emily Boudreau, junior Sierra Brusven, sophomore Randi Donahue, and Weaver also registered assists on the afternoon. Senior goalkeeper Alexis Beattie was not challenged much throughout the game, as the fourth-year Warrior needed to make only a pair of saves en route to securing the shutout victory.

In a game that was controlled on both sides throughout by Corban, the Warriors did not get on the scoreboard until the 30th minute when Irwin received a pass from Boudreau and sent a one-timer into the upper right corner of the goal for the eventual game-winner. Irwin's goal was the first of her collegiate career, as Boudreau tallied her third assist this season.

Just over ten minutes later, Stark would get into the action when she rebounded her own shot past a diving George Fox keeper to extend Corban's lead to two goals. Stark would begin the play by sending her initial shot off of the Bruins' net-minder before collecting the rebound and poking it past GFU's diving goalie before depositing her second shot into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.

Corban would register 17 more shots (17-to-0) than George Fox in the first half, as the Warriors secured a two-goal lead heading into halftime.

Just over eight minutes into the second half, McDonough would team with Sullivan on a crossing pass that she one-timed into the left side of the goal for her first score of the season that pushed Corban's lead to three goals.

Two minutes later, McDonough would score her second goal of the game when she teamed with Weaver on a through ball behind George Fox's defense that allowed McDonough a one-on-one opportunity against the Bruins' keeper that she capitalized on to push Corban's lead to four goals at the 55:26 mark.

"It feels good to get a win, as it's always fun to play against George Fox. This was an exciting game," said McDonough. "My first goal was a one-touch to the same corner that it came from, as I have to give credit to Audrey (Sullivan) because she gave me a great pass. On my second goal, I received a great ball from Katelyn (Weaver) and hit it with the outside of my foot to the corner of the goal."

Heading into the final 10 minutes of the game, Weaver took a combo pass from Brusven and Sullivan en route to tallying her first goal of the season. Sullivan would begin the play with a pass out to Brusven, who quickly one-timed a ball into the box where Weaver was waiting to flick the ball up and over the keeper into the back of the net for a 5-0 Corban lead at the 80:24 mark.

Just under five minutes later, Dominguez would score her first collegiate goal when she headed home a beautifully placed crossing pass off the foot of Donahue into the back of the net. The play would begin with Donahue dribbling down the sideline before lofting a perfectly placed pass onto the awaiting head of Dominguez, who flicked home a shot that eluded George Fox's keeper and found the left side of the goal for the final score of the afternoon allowing Corban to settle for the 6-0 victory.

"We wanted to play well and if the goals get us there then that makes us happy," commented Ziesemer on his team's four second half goals. "That is a good amount of goals against a good team like George Fox. I am pleased with that."

George Fox would get good play from both of its goalkeepers, as Alyssa Montero tallied a game-high nine saves in the first half before giving way to Morgan Hansen for the final 45 minutes where she registered a pair of saves for the Bruins.

Overall, Corban registered 26 more shots (28-to-2) than George Fox that included a 17-to-2 advantage in shots on goal.

"Our defense is playing very well this season, as they are limiting shots and are coming together really well," said Ziesemer on how his team controlled the offensive flow and defensive pressure. "Any time you shutout your first three opponents is pretty impressive."

Corban will return to action on Thursday, September 5th, beginning their three-game, five-day Southern California road trip against nationally-ranked Biola beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Al Barbour Field in La Mirada, California.

"Hopefully today's game gives us a little bit of confidence and the attitude that we have to go out and play some hard-nosed, high-pressure soccer," commented Ziesemer on this weekend's Southern California road trip against three quality opponents. "These three games (against Biola, The Master's, and No. 18-ranked Westmont) are going to tell us a lot as we are going to be under pressure. We could play really well and go 0-3. We really have to look at it one game at a time and really do our best to play some good soccer and get some results down there."
