Warrior Men’s Soccer Wins Fourth-Consecutive Match, Edging Warner Pacific, 2-0

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University men's soccer team scored a goal in each half on Saturday en route to a commanding 2-0 triumph over Warner Pacific College at Warrior Field.  For the Warriors, it is their fourth-consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) victory and sixth win overall on the season.

In addition to it being the fourth win in a row, it is also Corban's fourth-straight shutout.  In the four-match winning streak, the Warriors have scored 11 goals while allowing none.

Both teams started the game with chances on either end, as Warrior senior forward Derik Chaney (Helena, Mont.) found himself in on goal early in the match, but his shot went high and over the crossbar, keeping the contest scoreless.  Warner Pacific answered right back with a chance of its own, as Mario Guizar got behind the Corban defense and had a one-on-one opportunity, but Warrior senior goalkeeper Steven Mason (Santa Rosa, Calif.) made himself big and stoned Guizar with the point-blank save.

The Navy and Gold opened the scoring in the 19th minute when sophomore midfielder Quamie Dinnall (May Pen, Jamaica) beat his defender once, and then skillfully went past him again as he cut inside from the right side, and when he was 25 yards from goal, blasted a sizzling rocket into the top-right corner of the goal, giving the Warriors the 1-0 lead.  For Dinnall, it was his fourth goal of the 2014 campaign.

Neither side threatened the opposing team's goal significantly for the remainder of the first 45 minutes, and at the break, Corban maintained its one-goal advantage.

Warner Pacific held the slight shot advantage at the break, 8-6, and also tallied four corner kicks to just one for Corban.

In the second half, Corban came out firing, registering a couple of close opportunities right away, although neither resulted in a goal.

With the Warriors pressing, the second goal ultimately came when sophomore defender Tim Kagey (West Linn, Ore.) blasted a long free kick forward, and Chaney was able to get his head on the ball, flicking it behind the Knights' defense.  Walker, anticipating the flick, did well to get behind the defense and got to the ball just before Warner Pacific's goalkeeper did.  Walker then deftly touched the ball out of the air and past the goalie into the back of the net.  For Walker, it was his team-leading seventh goal of the season.  Both Chaney and Kagey received assists on the play.

Warrior sophomore forward Bobby Hutchin (Vancouver, Wash.) almost made it 3-0 immediately following Walker's goal when he hit a shot on frame, but the ball was cleared off of the line by a defender, keeping the score at 2-0.

Later in the second half, senior forward Josh Hamilton (Portland, Ore.) became the playmaker, creating a number of chances for the Warriors on the offensive end of the field.  He almost scored, but had his shot blocked in the 18-yard box.  Sophomore midfielder Mykenze Caswell (Eugene, Ore.), freshman midfielder Travez Whyte (Kingston, Jamaica), and freshman forward Miguel Naves (Verdale, Wash.) all had close-range shots blocked as well late in the match, ultimately leading to the two-score triumph for Corban.

In the second half, Corban displayed its dominance by out-shooting Warner Pacific, 20-2, ultimately resulting in a final shot count of 26-10 in favor of the home team.

Walker led the way for the Warriors with five shots, while Dinnall and Hamilton each added three.

After the match, Dinnall talked about his goal and the win for the Warriors.

Guizar totaled a team-high three shots for the Knights (4-3-3, 3-2-1 CCC) as he looked like the most likely candidate to score for Warner Pacific all afternoon long.

In goal for the Navy and Gold, Mason tallied three saves en route to his fourth-straight shutout and sixth overall on the year.

"We had a couple of spectacular offensive plays that led to goals today, and then wore them down with our depth and waves of pressure," stated head coach Aaron Lewis.  "I was pleased with the coordinated work off the ball defensively in the second half, and that work eventually led to more time with the ball late in the match."

Corban (6-3-1, 4-1-1 CCC) returns to action on Friday, October 10, when it hosts The College of Idaho.  Kickoff at Warrior Field is set for 4 p.m.
