Warrior Women’s Soccer Loses Nail-biter to Eastern Oregon in Overtime

BOX SCORE

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – Despite scoring the game-tying goal in the second half, the Corban University women's soccer team saw its comeback hopes crumble as Eastern Oregon University scored the golden goal in the first overtime to win on Friday afternoon, 2-1.

"We played very well but unfortunately, we conceded on a set piece late in the first half," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "We dominated the second half and managed to score a goal. We were unlucky to concede a second goal. It was a great game!"

The first half saw some exciting play of soccer from both teams, with neither team backing down from the challenge. However, as the first half was winding down, Eastern Oregon struck first, scoring the game's opening goal in the 42nd minute. With a free-kick awarded from a Corban foul, sophomore Chelsey Nicol placed the free-kick into the box, finding the head of senior Katherine Hood, who finished the play by heading it into the right side of the net.

Coming out in the second half, the Warriors were determined to get back in the game. In the 76th minute, Corban finally got its opportunity. Senior forward Randi Donahue playing a beautiful cross to junior forward Holly Martinez Moorman, who took the touch and fired the ball into the left side of the goal for the equalizer. For Moorman, it was her fifth goal of the 2016 season.

At the end of the final buzzer, the score stood at 1-1, with both teams heading into a golden-goal overtime period. While both teams fought hard, Eastern Oregon connected on the only shot in overtime when sophomore Alexandria Cuaresma played a touch on the ball in the box to sophomore Zoe Anderson, who fired the ball at the goal. Corban junior goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven was able to put a hand on the shot, but it wasn't enough, as the ball bounced in for the final goal in the 98th minute.

Corban outshot EOU 17-7 on the match, while EOU (8-4-3, 5-2-2 CCC) totaled seven saves to Corban's one.

The Warriors (9-6, 5-3 CCC) continue their CCC play at home on Saturday, facing Warner Pacific College at Willamette University's Sparks Field. Kick-off is set for 6 p.m.
