GRESHAM, Ore. – While winning both the men's and women's team-scored events at the Saints Open on Saturday, the Corban University track & field teams won 14 total individual events and set records along the way.
RESULTS
"It was a great day for our team after the snow melted and the track was cleared off," said Corban head coach Norm Berney. "At the end of the day, we ended up winning 14 events and Valerie Schmidt set a new school record in the 100 Meter Hurdles. Our coaches and I feel this is a great meet to evaluate our track & field team, and they were up to the challenge. We still have several basketball players coming out for the team, and we are excited about the potential we have to finish this 2019 season."
As a team, the Corban men totaled 151 points to take first place by 14 points. The Warrior women absolutely destroyed the field, racking up 196 points while scoring more than 100 points more than the next-closest competitor.
For the Corban women, rookie Valerie Schmidt uncorked a school-record time of 15.24 seconds in the 100m Hurdles, taking first place by more than one second. The time currently ranks third-fastest in the NAIA on the 2019 campaign.
Mackenzie Wilson impressed in the sprints for the Navy and Gold, winning the 100 Meters (12.84 seconds) and the 200 Meters (26.51 seconds). In addition, she was a part of Corban's winning 4x100 Relay (49.60 seconds) and 4x400 Relay (4:14.58).
In the distance events, Sydney Nichol shined and won both the 800 Meters (2:30.35) and the 1500 Meters (5:05.95), while Kira Bowers was outstanding in the 5000 Meters (20:07.96), crossing the finish line in first place.
On the men's side, Michael Schmidt cleared a height of 13' 11.25" in the Pole Vault to win the event, while also winning the 110m Hurdles (15.81 seconds).
Stephan Anderson performed well once again in the 400m Hurdles, placing first overall with a time of 58.10 seconds.
Fans got to enjoy a thrilling finish to the 1500 Meters, and it was Corban's Shane Davis that rose to the occasion with the strong kick, just beating out his competitor with a winning time of 4:14.70.
Finally, Robert Swoboda showed off the type of speed he has, crossing the finish line comfortably in front of all other competitors in the 5000 Meters with a mark of 15:38.60.
Corban returns to action this week at the Willamette Dual Meet on Thursday, March 14. Competition will begin in the afternoon at McCulloch Stadium at 4 p.m.
