EUGENE, Ore. – Challenging NCAA Division I University of Oregon to an exhibition bout on Friday evening, the Corban University women's soccer team nearly shocked the Ducks under the lights of Papé Field in Eugene. Taking a scoreless tie into the 78th minute, U of O finally broke through in the game's final moments, riding two late goals from Ally Cook to claim a 2-0 triumph.
BOX SCORE
"We learned a lot about ourselves today against a very good Oregon side," said director of soccer Tim Kagey. "It was great to get tested by such a strong side. We are excited that this is just the beginning of our year."
The Ducks went 6-5-5 last season (4-4-3 Pac-12), marking their best record since 2006. Optimism surrounding the program is high heading into the fall campaign, as all 11 of the squad's starters from last year will be back in 2021.
Corban was unfazed by the pedigree of its foe, however, holding Oregon scoreless for the majority of Friday evening's contest.
It wasn't until the 78th minute that the Ducks broke through, when Cook converted a pass from Jordan Wormdahl to put the hometown team in front. Cook then struck again in the 87th minute, this time assisted by Maya Hahn.
Mei Suetsugu and Makali Nance each fired off shots for the Warriors in the defensive battle, and 20 members of the squad saw the pitch, giving the roster valuable experience as the team's official non-conference schedule approaches.
Despite surrendering the two late goals, Friday's result provides only further excitement for the Navy and Gold's upcoming fall campaign, serving as a testament to the level of talent the Warriors possess.
Corban will officially begin its season on the road against NCAA Division III Pacific University on August 26.
