CALDWELL, Idaho – The Corban University Baseball team earned a huge day two sweep on a snowy Sunday at Wolfe Field against the College of Idaho. The Warriors won game one by a final score of 12-0 in seven innings and followed that up with a 5-2 win in game two.
The offense started early in game one as the Warriors scored in each of the first three innings. An Estenio Sede RBI-groundout opened the scoring in the top of the first.
After a shutdown inning from Corban ace Zack Simon, the Navy and Gold offense went to work in the top of the second.
Chris Grayson started the inning with a double to left, and the Warriors took advantage of several C of I miscues to put runners in scoring position. Maxwell Jeffrey drove in a run with a RBI-groundout to extend the lead to 2-0. Corban would add another on an RBI hit by pitch by Kyle Clay and tally another run on a Sede sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 4-0 early.
Corban added another run on a Jeffrey RBI-single in the top of the fourth inning to jump out to a 5-0 lead, which was plenty of cushion for Simon.
Simon delivered again for the Navy and Gold, limiting the Yotes to just three hits in his six innings of shutout ball. The electric right-hander struck out 10 and walked just one en route to his fifth win of the season.
The offense came alive again in the top of the sixth inning to put the 10-run rule into effect. A one-out triple from Ryan Clay was the spark for the Navy and Gold in the inning. The next five hitters would reach with Kyle Clay and Reese Fawley notching RBI-singles, a walk to Scott Arzter, and another Grayson double pushed Corban in front 10-0.
The squad would add two more runs in the top of the seventh on an RBI-triple by Sede scoring Nick Pope which was promptly followed by an Artzer RBI-groundout to push the lead to 12-0.
Corban turned the ball over to Ben Aguilera who struck out two in the bottom of the seventh to seal the shutout, seven inning victory.
Game two saw an early offensive onslaught by the Navy and Gold as well. After back-to-back singles by the Clay brothers, Estenio Sede launched a double into the left-center gap to push Corban ahead 2-0.
The momentum would carry into the top of the second, as Grayson tallied an RBI-double scoring Artzer and would eventually come around to score on another Jeffrey RBI-single.
The four early runs would hold up for the rest of the contest as Warrior starter Nate Martin turned in another fantastic performance, coming off his CCC Pitcher of the Week award. The righty would go eight strong innings, allowing eight hits and just one earned run while striking out five.
The Yotes tallied their first run of the game in the seventh to make it a 4-1 score, which is where the score would remain until the ninth inning. Corban tallied a run in the top of the ninth from Jeffrey to push the advantage to 5-1.
The Navy and Gold turned to veteran bullpen arm Drew Scherrer, who was making his first appearance in over a month, to close out the ballgame. The Yotes tallied one run, but Scherrer slammed the door getting a Jonah Hultberg ground out to first base to earn the save.
It was an impressive day all around the diamond for the Warriors. Simon and Martin, the two starters, went a combined 14 innings, allowing just one earned run, walking just one, and striking out 15. Meanwhile, the Corban defensive effort was just as strong, playing error-free baseball on the day despite snowy and rainy conditions in Caldwell.
Offensively, the Corban effort had several highlight performances. Kyle Clay turned in a 4-4 day in game one of the afternoon. Estenio Sede had 5 RBI on the day, while Maxwell Jeffrey turned in a 4 RBI day.
It was a much-needed series split for the Warriors who are looking to continue to climb into the CCC standings.
Corban (17-18-1, 4-8) returns home on Friday, April 15th for a CCC-doubleheader against Oregon Tech. First pitch is slated for 12 p.m.
