KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – As opposed to most tournaments, the Corban University Women's Golf team was scheduled to play two complete rounds on day one of the Run-In at the Ranch down in southern Oregon, but due to unforeseen flooding and heavy rainfall, host Oregon Tech and the staff at Running Y Ranch were forced to cancel round two due to poor playing abilities. The Warrior women are just barely in sixth overall as a team within the seven-team field, just four strokes behind I-5 rival Bushnell University with one round to play still tomorrow.
"In spite of the change in weather, which was very cold and wet, I'm proud as to how our ladies played today," explained Warriors' head coach Charlie Marshall. "They stayed positive and were hitting some great shots. It's unfortunate round two was cut short, as they had begun to score better than in round one when it was called due to rain and flooding."
As to be expected on their home course, the tourney host and No. 19-ranked Lady Owls of OIT (297) are in the first overall team position following the opening round, over twenty strokes above The College of Idaho (391) who are firmly in second and Southern Oregon University (328) in third. Simpson University (346) and Bushnell (358) round out the top five, with the Warriors (362) and Southwestern Oregon Community College (384) in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Individually, Tech's Baylee Hodgman and the Yotes' Reece Garey are tied for medalist honors after each shooting even par for the day, with SOU's Keira Chang (73) and another pair of Lady Owls in Madie Hepner (74) and Madison Dick (75) in the third through fifth placements. The top Warriors through 18 holes played today were sophomores Madelyn Moore (85) and Yaone Mokgatle (86), who are in 14th and a tie for 15th to represent two of the top fifteen finishers thus far. Moore was the only Navy and Gold women's golfer to turn in a red number on her scorecard today, as she birdied the par-three seventh hole and sank eight par putts.
Sophomore Ashlyn Thomas (92) led a duo of freshmen Warriors to round out the team scoring, as she's in 27th overall followed by Jaycie Moubray and Riley Sparkman who each carded a 99 and are in a tie for 36th. Freshman Taylor Wirth, who's golfing on an individual this week, was one stroke off Moubray and Sparkman with an even round of 100 (38th).
Tomorrow morning, the Warriors will attempt to beat the weather once again to finish the Run-In- at the Ranch tourney, with a shotgun start scheduled for 9am. More information will be made available on the tournament host site Clippd, which can be found by clicking HERE.
