Sparkman Rallies for Top Ten Finish as Warriors Finish Fifth in Run-In at the Ranch

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The Corban University Men's Golf team improved their team-stroke finish by six and nearly completed a four-place comeback against I-5 rival Bushnell University, as the Warriors took home a fifth place team placement among the nine teams in action at the Run-In at the Ranch, hosted by Oregon Tech at the Running Y Ranch.

"The team improved on their day one performance thanks to the improved weather and course conditions and were very close of finishing above Bushnell who was tied for the team lead yesterday," Corban head coach Charlie Marshall explained earlier today. "I'm proud of everyone's efforts to wrap up our first of two tournaments this week, and shoutout to Brayden for playing a great round and nearly sinking our second hole-in-one of the season!"

After finishing day one tied with the Beacons, the host Hustlin' Owls (582) rallied on day two to post a ten-stroke improvement and take the team title by three strokes over The College of Idaho (585). Southern Oregon University's A-team (590) moved up to third, while Bushnell (603) fell from first to fourth in a single round to just barely beat out the Navy and Gold (606). OIT's B-team (622) came from behind to best Simpson University (625), with Southwestern Oregon Community College (644) closing out the team scoring after SOU's B-team finished with just three-counting bags, making them ineligible for the team scoring with a minimum of four golfers required.

With day one ending in round two being cut short and a two-way tie atop the individual standings. Today, C of I's Carson King (140) carded the best round out of any student-athlete to claim the individual win, followed by a two-way tie for runner-up between OIT's Cayson VanBeekum and Bushnell's Matt Forsyth who trailed King by two strokes. Right behind King in the best performances of the day was Corban senior Brayden Sparkman (146), who flew from seventeenth to a tie for seventh overall in a single round of 18 to clinch a top ten finish thanks to three birdies, fourteen pars, and just a single bogey. His one bogey came on hole one, yet made up for it with two of his birdies in the front nine while he was just a stroke under par on the back.

True freshman Isaac Laro (151) joined Sparkman in moving more than ten placements up the individual leaderboard in day two, as he finished just one stroke over par for the round to finish in a five-way tie for twelfth. Junior David Harvey (154) wrapped up play in a four-way tie for 21st, with seniors Shane Jacobus (156) and Andy Austen (159) placing 27th and 34th, respectively, and represented the final Warrior scores in the Klamath Basin this week.

The Corban men's golf program will next be in action this upcoming weekend, as they'll host their annual Coastal Collegiate Classic at Salishan Golf Links just south of Gleneden Beach. Day one will begin on Saturday with the tournament wrapping up on Sunday afternoon.
