Warriors’ Strong Play Propels Corban Men’s Golf to Top Eight Finish at Willamette Valley Cup

SALEM, Ore. – A day two resurgence for the Corban University Men's Golf program allowed the A-team to move up three placements in the team standings across the final round, while the reserves held their own in a 13th overall finish but were just two team strokes off the Boxers of NCAA Pacific University's varsity squad at the Willamette Valley Cup.

"The men made a great push at the end with Brayden going eagle-birdie to end up -2 for the day to help move us up to an eighth place tie," Corban head coach Charlie Marshall explained. "Caden eagled the same hold Brayden did earlier in the day. Overall, the guys on both teams played quite well."

The tourney host Bearcats of Willamette University (568) watched their one-stroke team lead following day one action evaporate thanks to a come-from-behind victory from the Linfield University Wildcats (566), who overcame a bid from Whitman College (568) as well to finish top of the team standings. Fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) members Lewis-Clark State College (573) and Bushnell University (573) tied for fourth place to round out the top five.

Corban men's golf (588) ended up catching the Loggers of the University of Puget Sound (589) by a single stroke in the team standings after a 16-stroke improvement between rounds one and two, led by senior Brayden Sparkman and his round of 69 that propelled him up 23 positions in the individual standings to finish in 22nd overall. Junior Owen Heath was even on the day at 71 to finish in 29th and moved up ten placements, while seniors David Harvey and Andy Austen each submitted scorecards of 73 to finish in 36th and 42nd, respectively.

On the reserve team side for the Navy and Gold, senior Shane Jacobus (74) finished as the top individual by tying Heath in 29th overall, while true freshman Brendan Barbeau (77) impressed once again to finish tied with Austen for 42nd. Rounding out the day two team scoring was freshman Bo Purnell (77) in 79th and redshirt junior Brock Nelson (82) in 66th.

The Warrior men's golf team will be in action at the end of the month as they partake in the Columbia Basin Invitational at Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Washington on March 30th and 31st.
