Warriors Fit to Be Tied With Southern Oregon

BOX SCORE

SALEM, Ore.
– In a game that had huge playoff implications attached to it, Corban's women's soccer team got a pair of first half goals from junior Erin Laughlin (Ephrata, Wash.) and sophomore Rachel Cole (San Ramon, Calif.) in a heart-wrenching double overtime deadlock with Southern Oregon, 2-2, Friday afternoon at Warrior Field.

With today's tie, Corban moves to 9-5-2 overall and 6-1-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon is now 6-8-2 overall and 4-3-1 in CCC action.

Under cloudy skies and windy conditions, the host Warriors brought a six-game winning streak into today's game and looked good in the opening 45 minutes before succumbing to a pair of Raider goals in the second half.

Corban got on the board at the 10:59 mark when junior Genessa Neeser (Pocatello, Idaho) found a wide-open Laughlin down the far sideline with a perfect pass. Wasting no time, Laughlin took two dribbles and then lofted a 20-yard shot up and over Southern Oregon's keeper for the early 1-0 lead.

Less than 15 minutes later, Corban added another goal at the 25:11 mark when Cole notched her third goal of the season with a shot from 18 yards out into the lower left corner of the net for the 2-0 lead.

The host Warriors would hold their lead until the 47th minute when Southern Oregon's Alexis Mahoney scored her first of two goals on the afternoon on an attempted Corban clearance. The Warriors' attempt to clear the ball away from danger went off the leg of SOU's Maddi Sprott and onto the awaiting knee of Mahoney, who lifted her shot over Corban's keeper and into the back of the net to make the score 2-1.

Twenty minutes later, Southern Oregon got another goal from Mahoney when the Raiders' Chenin Young sent a crossing pass onto her fellow teammate. Mahoney took Young's pass and eluded an on-coming Warrior defender before depositing her shot into the back of the net for the tying goal at the 68:34 mark.

Both teams would have scoring opportunities in the waning minutes of the game, as Corban almost popped in the game-winner when a pair of Warriors had chances from within two yards of the goal but could not capitalize. Southern Oregon had its best scoring chance in the final seconds when Auika Muragin blocked a free kick and then went the length of the field before she was stopped by a charging Corban goalie.

In the extra periods, neither team would crack its opposing team's goal despite Southern Oregon's advantage in shots (5-1) over the two extra frames therefore resulting in the 2-2 tie.

Senior goalkeeper Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) recorded a game-high tying six saves in keeping her unbeaten streak alive at seven games. On the other end, Southern Oregon's Jessica Kuehlwein also made six saves as she also got some defensive help with a pair of team saves.

Corban will return to the field on Saturday, October 24th, when they host Oregon Tech beginning at 2:00 p.m. on Warrior Field.

NOTE: Senior Recognition will take place at halftime, as the Warriors' program will be honoring seven players that will be donning the navy and gold for the final time in Salem.
