PORTLAND, Ore. – Despite trailing by a deficit of just 1-0 at the half, Corban's women's soccer team watched as the NAIA's No. 5-ranked Concordia erupted for four goals in an 18-minute span in the second period en route to suffering a 5-0 Cascade Collegiate Conference opening loss Friday night at Delta Park.
With the win, Concordia improved to 8-1-0 on the year while Corban fell to 3-5-2. The contest represented the conference opener for both squads.
The two teams combined for 15 shots in the first half with CU's Kaityn Tebbs provided the lone score in the first 45 minutes after turning on a ball played in by teammate Sami Andrews in the 28th minute.
After out shooting Corban 11-to-4 in the opening stanza, Concordia widened the margin in the second with a 15-to-2 output to finish with a 26-to-6 edge.
The Cavaliers converted four of those attempts with Shelby Bloodworth netting her sixth score of the season in the 67th minute of action.
Ten minutes later, CU's Tebbs notched her second score of the day with a score off a corner kick provided by Angie Turner to boost the score to 3-0.
At the 84:23 mark, Kelton McFadden fired a 25-yard line drive which sailed into the net to extend Concordia's lead to four goals.
Twenty-seven seconds later, Jessica Ramback found the back of the net for CU's fifth goal of the day with an unassisted blast from 15 yards out.
Senior goalkeeper
Jennifer Bassett (Keizer, Ore.) notched a game-high seven saves for Corban in the loss, while seniors
Kacie Emerick (Bellingham, Wash.) and
Jessica Matthews (Yelm, Wash.) each had two shot attempts for the visiting Warriors.
Meanwhile, Concordia's Georgie Christensen tallied three saves in the win with Tori Talbutt posted one save in closing out the shutout for the Cavs.
Corban will return to the field tomorrow – Saturday, September 26th – when they continue play in the Rose City against the Knights of Warner Pacific beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Portland Christian High School.
