ASHLAND, Ore. – With 12 seconds left in overtime, senior
Emily Tsugawa netted her eighth goal of the season on a free kick to help Corban's women's soccer team pick up a 1-0 victory over Southern Oregon Friday at University Soccer Field.
With today's win, Corban improves to 8-5-0 overall and 3-2-0 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon falls to 6-5-2 overall and 2-2-1 in CCC games. Today's win vaults Corban into a tie with Northwest Christian for the fourth and final playoff spot, as the Warriors are a mere three points behind the top two teams – Concordia and Oregon Tech – in the current league standings.

Marty Ziesemer. "We were banged, but the team kept battling and perservered under difficult circumstances."
Southern Oregon dominated the game offensively, as the Raiders registered 10 more shots (20-to-10) than Corban that included a 10-to-1 advantage in the second half. SOU also earned nine more corner kicks (14-to-3) than the Warriors, yet Corban was whistled for three more fouls (10-to-7) over the near 100 minutes of the game.
Over the opening 45 minutes of play, it was a pretty evenly matched game with Southern Oregon getting off nine shots versus Corban's six. The host Raiders would have the best scoring opportunity in the 23rd minute when Alyssa Bricker unleashed a shot that was blocked by a Corban defenders keeping the scoreboard clean.
The second half would begin with Southern Oregon stepping up the defensively pressure and offensive firepower, as the Raiders did not allow Corban to register a shot over the first 41-plus minutes until freshman
Terrika Weaver rocketed a shot wide to the right of the goal at the 86:49 mark. SOU would get half of its shots from all-conference forward Stephanie Carr, as she tallied five shots that included three getting blocked by a Warrior defender and two more saves by Corban's keeper. Fortunately for Corban, Southern Oregon could not put any of its shots into the back of the net keeping the game scoreless and forcing an extra period of play.
In overtime, Corban would turn things around offensively getting three shots in just over a one-minute span with the final one coming off the foot of Tsugawa for the game-winner at the 99:48 mark after the fourth-year Warriors' shot bounced off the left post and into the back of the net.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Kaitlyn Mendenhall recorded her first shutout of the season thanks to a game-high six saves, while Southern Oregon split time between its two keepers Katelyn Allen and Kelsey Clement. The two Raider net-minders would combine for four saves, as Allen tallied a team-best three saves in 45 minutes between the pipes with Clement making one save on four shots over the final 54-plus minutes with the final one getting past her and into the back of the net.
Corban will return to action tomorrow – Saturday, October 13th – against conference co-leading Oregon Tech beginning at 6:00 p.m. at Steen Sports Park in Klamath Falls. Meanwhile, Southern Oregon will host Northwest Christian beginning at 1:00 p.m. in Ashland.
