Corban Women’s Soccer Blanks Northwest Christian, 2-0

BOX SCORE

Eugene, Ore. – Just when it needed a victory, the Corban University women's soccer team delivered in a big way on Saturday evening against Northwest Christian University, defeating the Beacons, 2-0.  The Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) triumph launched the Navy and Gold up into a tie for fifth place in the CCC standings with two matches remaining on the regular-season schedule.

Corban jumped on top early in the contest when junior midfielder Randi Donahue (Bellingham, Wash.) blasted a shot from ten yards out that bounced off of a Beacon defender and came right back to her.  Donahue made no mistake on her second chance, placing her shot into the left side of the goal to put the Warriors up 1-0 at the 7:00 minute mark.  For Donahue, it was her third goal of the 2014 campaign.

Neither side was able to score again in a somewhat defensive first half, with the score remaining 1-0.  Corban held the slight edge in both shots, 3-1, and corner-kicks, 2-0, during those first 45 minutes.

In the second half, the Warriors came out firing, racking up 10 shots overall in the period.  The offensive pressure paid its dividends in the 50th minute for the Navy and Gold as a foul in the 18-yard box gave Corban freshman forward Sadee Kallis (Yakima, Wash.) the opportunity to convert a penalty kick.  Kallis calmly slotted her shot to the left side and into the back of the net, doubling Corban's lead.

From that point on, the Warrior defense held strong, limiting the Beacons' chances to just three shots during the second half, ultimately resulting in the shutout-win.

Corban senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) earned her sixth shutout in the process, making two saves in the crucial conference victory.

Offensively, Donahue led the way with four shots, while Kallis and senior defender Emily Anderson (Salem, Ore.) each recorded three.  Overall, Corban held the shot advantage for the match, 13-4, while also winning the corner-kick battle, 5-1.

"It was a great overall team effort tonight," commented head coach Marty Ziesemer.  "I was very pleased with our pressure as a group as it played a part in both of our goals.  It is good to get the three points as we get closer to qualifying for postseason play."

The Warriors (8-6-2, 3-3-1 CCC) return to action on Thursday when they host The College of Idaho (6-4-4, 3-1-3 CCC) at Warrior Field at 3 p.m.  The match will prove pivotal in the final CCC standings as the Yotes currently sit two points ahead of the Warriors in the table.
