Lennier Scores Game-Winner in Warrior Women’s Soccer 1-0 Win over Evergreen

BOX SCORE

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Corban University women's soccer team went on the road on Thursday afternoon and won its second-consecutive Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) match, defeating The Evergreen State College Geoducks, 1-0.  Sophomore midfielder Amber Lennier (Tracy, Calif.) served as the hero on the day for the Warriors, scoring her first-collegiate goal which ultimately proved to be the game-winner.

For Corban, it is the team's second-straight victory in conference by the score of 1-0, moving the team up in the CCC standings at a crucial time with just four conference matches remaining in the 2014 season.  The victory also marks the first CCC road triumph for Corban this year.

In a back-and-forth contest that saw both sides generate opportunities early on, it was the Warriors that struck first, finding the back of the net at the 31:00 minute mark in the first half.  Freshman Dani Morseman (Cashmere, Wash.) picked out Lennier with a long throw-in, and Lennier made no mistake, heading the ball past the Evergreen (3-8-0, 1-3-0 CCC) goalkeeper to give Corban the 1-0 advantage.

At the halftime break, the score remained 1-0.  Corban held the slight edge in shots, 8-7, while dominating in the corner-kick department, 4-0.

The second stanza saw both sides come out and play, looking for the next goal that could prove to be the difference in the tight conference affair.  Evergreen rattled off a number of shots, but Corban senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.) was up to the challenge, racking up five saves during the second half en route to earning her third-straight shutout in the triumph.  For the game, Mendenhall registered eight total saves.

Offensively, the Warriors outshot the Geoducks, 17-15, while notching seven corner kicks to none for Evergreen.  Junior Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) led the way for Corban with four shots, while five other Warriors tallied two shots.

"It was a hard fought win today," said head coach Marty Ziesemer.  "There were lots of things to be proud of.  We weren't amazing, but we did enough to secure the win.  Winning on the road is tough in this conference, so I am pleased to start this road trip with a win."

Corban (7-5-2, 2-2-1 CCC) continues its pivotal CCC road trip on Saturday when the team travels to Northwest University (6-5-1, 4-0-0 CCC) for another conference clash in Washington.  Kickoff in Kirkland against the first-place Eagles is scheduled for 1 p.m.
