ASHLAND, Ore. – In the pinnacle meet of the 2019 season, the Corban University men's and women's track & field teams got off to a strong start on Friday, seeing a number of All-Conference performances during day one of the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Championships, presented by U.S. Bank.
During the action, Jordan Woodvine broke the school record in the hammer throw, and the women's 4x100-meter relay team booked its ticket to nationals.
DAY-ONE RESULTS
"Our coaches have done a great job preparing the team for this meet," said head coach Norm Berney. "I thought we had a solid performance for the first day, and we have some events tomorrow that we are ranked high in."

The hammer throw was the first event of the championship meet, and Woodvine kicked off the weekend with a bang, uncorking a program-record toss of 148' 6". The mark is over 12 feet better than her previous personal best, landing her in third place individually and earning her All-Conference accolades in the event.
The women's 4x100-meter relay team also found the podium on Friday. MacKenzie Wilson, Selina Newingham, Leah McClain, and Kristi Childers combined for a time of 47.90 seconds, their best mark of the season. The third-place effort clinched a berth at the NAIA Track & Field Championships for the quartet for the second-straight season.
Valerie Schmidt—who was honored at the beginning of the meet for her runner-up finish at the CCC Multi-Event Championships—continued her impressive rookie season with a 14.86-second effort in the 100-meter hurdles. The freshman standout earned All-Conference accolades and placed third individually, adding to her already-stellar inaugural campaign with the Navy and Gold.
On the men's side, All-CCC decathletes Michael Schmidt and Reagan Shira spotlighted the first day of action, excelling in the long jump. Schmidt registered a mark of 22' 1", tying for third in the event with College of Idaho's Kendrik Caldwell. Caldwell would end up the beneficiary of a tiebreaker, however, narrowly edging Schmidt for the final spot on the podium. Shira took sixth overall, notching a distance of 21' 6 ¾" to earn three valuable points for the Warriors' team score.
The night concluded with a gritty race from Robert Swoboda and Nikolas Carter (35:15.66, personal record) in the 10,000 meters. Swoboda hung steady with the leading group for the vast majority of the race, eventually notching a fourth-place finish with his time of 32:36.93. The performance was a valiant one, particularly given the stiff competition and the fact it was just his second time competing in the grueling event.
The Warriors will be back in action tomorrow for the second half of the championship meet, with day-two's events set to kick-off at 11 a.m.
