NAIA Championships Preview: Corban Track & Field Sending Nine Representatives

GULF SHORES, Ala. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has officially announced the complete entry list for this week's 2019 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships (May 23-25), naming nine members of the Corban University men's and women's track & field teams to the list of qualifiers.

Fans can follow along with all of this weekend's action via live scoring, available HERE.

Seven of the nine Warriors will come from the women's side. The squad's 4x100-meter relay team—comprised of MacKenzie Wilson, Selina Newingham, Leah McClain, Kristi Childers, and alternate Hannah Beaulieu—will make its second-consecutive appearance at the national meet, qualifying at last weekend's CCC Championships with a third-place time of 47.90 seconds.

Hannah Clarizio has proven herself capable of running the steeplechase as fast anyone in the country, finishing below the 11:10.00 mark in the event at three-straight meets earlier this spring. Her time of 11:07.00 at the Willamette-Corban Dual on March 14 still ranks sixth in the NAIA, and she will undoubtedly look to close her collegiate career with a similar performance at this week's national meet.

Rookie multi-event sensation Valerie Schmidt booked her ticket to Gulf Shores after a tremendous runner-up performance (4,620 points) at this year's CCC Combined Events. She will enter this weekend as the No. 4 point-getter of the field of 16 qualifiers, just 25 points back of Doane's Maitlyn Thomsen, 87 points behind Jessica Deterding of Concordia (Neb.), and 106 points off the pace of top-seeded CCC-rival Paige Dodd of Eastern Oregon.

On the men's side, Corban's dynamic decathlon duo of Michael Schmidt and Reagan Shira will represent the Navy and Gold on the national stage. Schmidt—who was an All-American at last year's championship meet—possesses the No. 2 mark in the NAIA (6,763 points) and a legitimate shot at this year's national title in the decathlon.

It's sometimes easy to overlook just how good Shira is, who is an All-CCC decathlete in his own right. His 6,465-point performance at this year's conference meet is good for No. 5 on the NAIA performance list, putting him in a prime position to contend for a spot on the podium this weekend.

The two decathletes will face talented competition at the event, with defending National Champion Pieter Top (6,868 points) of Westmont serving as the primary threat among the field of 16. Top's teammate Jackson Nemitz (6,480 points) and Doane's Levi Sudbeck (6,516 points) are also early favorites to compete for a medal.

Below is a complete list of Corban track & field's national qualifiers, along with each athlete's national ranking, qualifying event, and time/score.
