Clay’s Walk-Off HR Highlights Corban Baseball’s Sweep of C of I

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team earned a series sweep of College of Idaho with a pair of wins on a rainy Sunday at Volcanoes Stadium. A thrilling walk-off homer from Kyle Clay delivered an 8-7 win in the first game of the day, and the Warriors capped off the three-game weekend sweep with an 8-3 triumph (five innings) in the rain-shortened finale.

"I'm really proud of the resilient effort from this weekend," said head coach Derek Legg. "Our guys stuck to the plan and answered back any time we needed them to. It was a great weekend for Warrior baseball."

The visiting Yotes got off to a hot start in game one, pushing across two runs in the first half inning of the contest; those marked the first two earned runs Warrior ace Zack Simon had allowed all year.

The Corban bats issued a resounding response in the bottom half of the inning, however, answering with three of their own to take a one-run lead.

An RBI line-drive sac fly from Kairos Torres-Umi plated the squad's first run of the frame, and then Brian Landon roped an opposite-field double into the left-center gap to even the score at two.

A day after collecting his first-career base hit, rookie Scott Artzer capped off the inning with his first collegiate RBI, driving in Landon with a run-scoring single to left-center.

From there, the pitchers would settle in for three scoreless innings, with the next scoring not coming until the bottom of the fifth. A picture-perfect situational at-bat from Cale Thompson ended in an RBI groundout from the Warrior keystone, and then Landon struck again with a timely two-strike RBI single up the middle to make it a 5-2 lead for the Navy and Gold.

After the Yotes clawed one back in the top of the seventh, a two-run single from Keenan O'Brien made it a four-run advantage for Corban in the eighth, putting together the makings of a comfortable finish for the Warriors.

The resilient Yotes would plate four in the top of the ninth, however, stunning the hometown squad and extending the contest. Corban surrendered three walks and made an error in the disappointing stanza.

After the frustrating ninth, Kyle Clay quickly lifted the spirits of the Warrior dugout, blasting a walk-off solo homer to left field to lead off the bottom of the inning in exhilarating fashion. It marked Clay's second long ball of the season, punctuating a wild, twisting and turning game one at Volcanoes Stadium.

Jacob Bowser picked up the win in relief for the Warriors, while Colby Durski—who surrendered the homer to Clay—was saddled with the loss.

As the rain began to come down heavily in Keizer, Nate Martin took the ball in game two for the Navy and Gold.

Corban got off to another quick start offensively, with Thompson dunking in an RBI single in the bottom of the first to give the hometown dugout a 1-0 lead after one.

From there, Martin looked sharp through the first two innings, and he appeared to be in line for another smooth inning in the third. After two quick outs, a single and a Warrior error allowed the stanza to continue, and then C of I's Ryan Blokker blasted a three-run long ball to left to give the visitors the lead.

Fortunately for Corban, the Warrior offense responded with four in their half of the inning; Estenio Sede had the biggest hit of the frame, clearing the loaded bases with a two-out double against the base of the left-field fence.

Back-to-back run scoring doubles from Brad Pellkofer and Tyler Covalt added two more for the Warriors in the bottom of the fourth, and then Nainoa Ka'ahanui joined the fun with an RBI two-bagger of his own in the next frame.

Ka'ahanui finished the contest with a pair of hits, while the leadoff man Pellkofer also tallied a multi-hit performance (2-for-2, 3 R, RBI).

After that, the umpires and coaches convened and determined that the playing conditions were too wet to continue, calling the game after the five innings were completed.

Martin collected the win, throwing five innings and surrendering just the three runs—none of which were earned.

Ben Gaff took the loss for the visiting Yotes, who saw their losing skid move to seven after this weekend's series sweep.

Corban (9-4-1) will hit the road for a pivotal early-season road test next weekend, heading to Lewiston, Idaho to challenge No. 4-ranked Lewis-Clark State College in a four-game series at Harris Field.
