BOX SCORE SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team picked up its first victory in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play on Saturday afternoon, as the Warriors defeated Southern Oregon University at Warrior Field, 1-0. The Navy and Gold received an outstanding performance by senior goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mendenhall (Windsor, Calif.), as she registered a season-high eight saves and collected her fourth shutout of the 2014 campaign.
The Warriors (6-5-2, 1-2-1 CCC) applied pressure right from the start, as junior midfielder Randi Donahue (Bellingham, Wash.) and junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) both notched shots in the first six minutes of action.
Southern Oregon (3-8-0, 2-2-0 CCC) initiated its attack as well, taking three shots on goal in the opening 17 minutes of the first frame. However, Mendenhall managed to keep the Raiders at bay.
Corban received another opportunity in the 32nd minute, but the shot by freshman midfielder Alanna Robinson (Sagle, Idaho) hit the crossbar. The ball ended up back at the feet of freshman forward Sadee Kallis (Yakima, Wash.), but her attempt sailed just wide of the goal.
After a tight first half, Corban was leading Southern Oregon in the shot department, 7-5. Mendenhall recorded four saves in the opening frame. The Raiders tallied three corner kicks compared to one by the Warriors.
Southern Oregon emerged as the aggressor in the second half, as the Raiders took four shots, including two on goal in the first 11 minutes of action. Meanwhile, the Warriors didn't achieve any shot attempts until late in the 71st minute. Donahue received a chipped pass from sophomore defender Olivia Erskine (Chehalis, Wash.), and Donahue made no mistake, sending the ball into the back of the net to break the tie and give Corban the 1-0 advantage. The Raiders had a chance for an equalizer in the 80th minute, but a shot by sophomore Lisa Elledge was blocked.
As a team, the Navy and Gold was out-shot by Southern Oregon, 14-11. The Raiders took eight shots on goal, while Corban only managed to fire four attempts.
Donahue's goal marked her second of the 2014 season. Both she and Fekkes led the Warriors with three shots apiece. Junior midfielder Ashley Beykovsky (Gladstone, Ore.) received a warm welcome from the Corban crowd, as she made her first appearance of the season in the 42nd minute after being sidelined with an injury.
"We had a very gritty performance today," said head coach Marty Ziesemer. "We knew going in that both teams were very even in many ways. I was pleased with our back line. They are doing a great job in limiting shots and it is paying off with two-straight shutouts."
The Raiders were led by junior forward Megan McArthur, who compiled four shots on goal. Meanwhile, senior midfielder Jacquie Galvez took two shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Devon Walker collected three saves for Southern Oregon.
After the match, Donahue caught up with the Sports Information Office to comment on the victory.
Corban returns to pitch on Oct. 9, as the Warriors will face The Evergreen State College on the road. Kickoff in Olympia, Wash., is set for 4 p.m.
