Warrior Women’s Soccer Concedes Late Goal in 2-1 Loss to Westminster

BOX SCORE

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – In the final game of its eight-match road trip, the Corban University women's soccer team came up just short on Sunday morning, falling to Westminster College (Utah), 2-1.  The Warriors' defense held strong for most of the 90 minutes, but surrendering a goal in the 2nd minute put the squad behind early and Corban ultimately allowed another inside of the final six minutes of regulation, resulting in the defeat.

Westminster got on the board in that 2nd minute after a long throw-in found its way to a Griffin player who finished her shot into the back of the net.

Much of the remainder of the half went in favor of Westminster, as Corban registered just three shots, but the Warriors took advantage of a key play in the 43rd minute when junior forward Katelyn Fekkes (Stanwood, Wash.) received a pass from freshman forward Sadee Kallis (Yakima, Wash.) and then chipped her shot over the keeper and into the back of the net to bring the contest to level terms.

In the first 45 minutes, Westminster (6-0-1) outshot Corban, 8-3, while also holding the corner-kick edge, 3-0.

In the second stanza, Corban freshman goalkeeper Sheyenne Brusven (Silverton, Ore.) and the Warrior backline of defense held strong after facing an onslaught of Griffin shots, but the gate eventually broke down, and Westminster scored the go-ahead goal in the 85th minute, sealing the non-conference triumph.

Brusven played phenomenally for the Warriors in goal, racking up eight total saves, including six during the second half.  Both were career-best marks for the rookie.

The final shot count favored Westminster, 20-5, while the Griffins also edged Corban in the corner-kick department, 6-1.

"It was a tough game today against a good Westminster team," stated head coach Marty Ziesemer.  "They put us under pressure all game.  I am proud of the effort we had today and am excited to play in our first home game next weekend!"

The Warriors (4-3-1) return to Salem for their home-opener on Saturday, September 20, when they take on Trinity Lutheran College (Wash.) in a non-conference bout.  Kickoff is set for 12 p.m.
