Corban Track & Field Impresses at OSU High Performance Meet

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Over the past two days, the Corban University men's and women's track & field teams competed at the OSU High Performance Meet, hosted by NCAA Division I Oregon State University.

"We saw three more school records, and Michael Schmidt moved into the top-six of the 400-meter hurdles in the national rankings," said head coach Norm Berney.

Schmidt continues to excel in his junior season, besting a talented field—which included eight NCAA Division I representatives—in the 400-meter hurdles (52.74 seconds) in just his second time competing in the event this year. That's an NAIA 'A' standard time, and nearly three seconds faster than the Cascade Collegiate Conference's (CCC) next-best mark.

The reigning NAIA Field Athlete of the Week also set a new school record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 14' 9.5" on day one of the meet.

His sister Valerie Schmidt clocked another sub-15-second time in the 100-meter hurdles (14.99 seconds), placing ninth among a field of numerous NCAA Division I athletes. She placed second among NAIA runners in the event.

Her 14.99 second mark is over a quarter of a second faster than the program's all-time record heading into this season, which she already surpassed with her time of 14.87 seconds at last week's CCC Multi-Event Championships.

Hannah Beaulieu continued to build upon her strong rookie campaign in the Navy and Gold, notching a time of 12.82 seconds in the 100 meters to qualify for the conference meet.

The Warriors' 4x100-meter relay team (MacKenzie Wilson, Selina Newingham, Leah McClain, and Kristi Childers) placed fourth at the meet with a time of 48.77 seconds. Wilson then added to her impressive day by breaking the school record in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 12.29 seconds to place seventh overall.

Momentum keeps building for the Corban track & field program, and the Navy and Gold will look to continue its success at the CCC Championships on May 10-11 at Southern Oregon University.
