SALEM, Ore. – After detailing the first half of the 2019 Corban University women's soccer recruiting class yesterday, head coach Derek Faulkner announced the squad's second wave of signees on Thursday morning.
Speaking about the anticipation surrounding the entire batch of newcomers, Faulkner said, "I'm excited about this group of incoming athletes. We have a good mix of players that will add depth and create competition within the squad right away."
Klarissa Barajas – 5'5" – Defender – Kennewick HS/Walla Walla CC – Kennewick, Wash.
Barajas, a product of Kennewick High School and Walla Walla Community College, brings an impressive résumé to the Navy and Gold. A talented all-around athlete, she competed in soccer, basketball, and track & field during high school, eventually focusing her efforts on the pitch at Walla Walla Community College. In her two-year stint there, she earned Player of the Week recognition in 2017, and was named an East Region All-Star in 2018.
Barajas intends to major in education while attending the university.
Cammie Wolter – 5'6" – Defender – Puyallup Senior HS/Pierce College – Puyallup, Wash.
Another standout signee, Wolter hopes to make an immediate impact in the Warrior back line. A multi-sport athlete at Puyallup Senior High School, Wolter would go on to enjoy a tremendous two-year career at Pierce College. While competing at the junior college level, Wolter was a two-time All-Region honoree, the 2019 Athlete of the Year, and a Captain's Award recipient.
During her time in Salem, Wolter plans to major in elementary education.
Kiana Kuia – 5'8" – Goalkeeper – H.P. Baldwin HS – Kahului, Hawaii
One of two goalkeepers in the 2019 recruiting class, Kuia comes to Corban from Kahului, Hawaii. During her decorated career in goal at H.P. Baldwin High School, she was named a First-Team All-Conference honoree on four separate occasions. Not done there, she was also a four-time All-State award-winner as well.
Kuia intends to study biomedical sciences while attending Corban.
Hailey Chun – 5'1" – Midfielder/Defender – Maui HS – Kahului, Hawaii
Chun, yet another Kahului, Hawaii native, joins the Navy and Gold midfield after competing at Maui High School. A three-sport standout during her time there, Chun also served as a member of the Pono Soccer Club, where she helped spur the team on to multiple league titles.
While in Salem, Chun plans on studying kinesiology.
Talia Samuelson – 5'6" – Forward – Auburn Riverside HS – Auburn, Wash.
After a decorated career at Auburn Riverside High School, Samuelson is set to provide the Navy and Gold with another dangerous scoring weapon in 2019. She graduated with the program's all-time record in career assists, ranking No. 2 in career goals and career points. Additionally, she was the MaxPreps Athlete of the Year for the school in 2017, collecting Honorable Mention All-League plaudits in 2015, Second-Team All-Area recognition in 2017, and First-Team All-League honors in both 2017 and 2018.
Samuelson is set to major in exercise science while attending Corban.
Malia Alonzo – 5'6" – Goalkeeper – Kapa'a HS – Kapa'a, Hawaii
Alonzo hopes to make an immediate impact between the pipes for the Warriors, coming to Salem from Kapa'a, Hawaii. A versatile athlete, Alonzo competed in four different sports in high school, highlighted by four impressive years on the pitch. No stranger to big matches, Alonzo participated in a number of crucial contests, helping her squad to a third-place finish in the 2017/2018 State Championships, and a fourth-place finish in the 2018 and 2019 tournaments.
Alonzo plans on studying pre-physical therapy during her time at the university.
Mar Verastegui – 5'5" – Forward – North Marion HS – Hubbard, Ore.
Hailing from nearby Woodburn, Ore., Verastegui's athleticism promises to be a valuable asset for Corban's offensive attack. A decorated product of North Marion High School in multiple sports, Verastegui earned All-League accolades in soccer, basketball, and track & field during her time there. After being named the league's soccer Player of the Year during her junior year, she earned the same award for her outstanding senior season on the basketball court.
The 5'5" forward intends on majoring in kinesiology while at Corban.
Asia Jackson – 5'7" – Midfielder/Forward – Mountain Home HS – Mountain Home, Idaho
A talented scorer and distributor, Jackson adds a strong résumé to the Corban fold. The Mountain Home, Idaho native was the No. 7 scorer in the Southern Idaho Conference (SIC) in 2017, earning All-SIC Honorable Mention plaudits and First-Team All-Conference accolades while attending Mountain Home High School. Additionally, Jackson was named the school's Most Valuable Player and the Conference Sportsperson of the Year.
Jackson is set to study biomedical sciences during her time in Salem.
Chanel Garcia – 5'8" – Midfielder – South Albany HS – Albany, Ore.
Originally from nearby Albany, Ore., Garcia served as a standout member of the South Albany High School women's soccer team. Able to play a variety of positions, she was named the squad's Offensive Most Valuable Player in both 2016 and 2018, demonstrating her aptitude for finding the back of the net. No stranger to the Warriors' home field, Garcia also competed as part of the Capital FC Timbers, where she has enjoyed a highly successful career at the club level.
Garcia plans on majoring in biomedical sciences while attending Corban.
The Warrior women will compete in the first official contest—regardless of sport—of Corban's 2019-20 academic year, hosting Cornerstone University (Mich.) on August 21 at the CFC Soccer Complex.
