Rubio Completes Three-Peat, Corban Men’s Wrestling Secures Five National Qualifiers After Fifth-Place Team Finish at CCC Championships

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Ten student-athletes of the RV Corban University Men's Wrestling team completed competition today in the final rounds of the 2024 Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships, where the Warriors secured a weight class champion for the third-straight season and set a new program-high in automatic qualifiers achieved for a single season, as five members of the Navy and Gold will pack their bags and head east for the national tournament scheduled for the end of February.

Back on the same mats they started their 2023-24 regular season in early November, the Warriors saw half of their remaining wrestlers secure national championship berths with placement finishes to set a new standard for the ever-growing Pacific Northwest program. In addition to their new individual record set, Corban scored 91.5 team points to finish fifth overall in the CCC standings to finish above both No. 19-ranked Eastern Oregon University (79.5) and No. 20-ranked Montana State University-Northern (78.5), two teams that were continuously ranked above the Warriors all season long.

Corban was led in team scoring by redshirt junior David Rubio, who avenged one of his two losses all season long in the 157-weight class championships bout with Menlo College's Kanaipono Tapia in another narrow decision between the two NAIA favorites, with Rubio taking a 4-1 score to the bank for his third-consecutive conference championship title. Rubio moved down from the 165-weight class last season and was still able to become the first three-time conference champion in school history. He'll now look to turn his 2023 National Runner-Up placement into another program first; a national championship title.

Sophomore Luke Jensen will be making his first NAIA national championship appearance after battling his way to a first-place match against the conference favorite, Evan Potter from Southern Oregon University, where Jensen was defeated 6-2 in their closest decision all year long. Fellow sophomore Bo Davis battle his way back up the consolation bracket after starting the day with his own 6-2 loss to Potter, eventually earning a third-place finish with a 6-1 decision over Christian Lopez from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.

Despite dropping his first two matchups of the day, true freshman Isaiah Twait became the fourth Warrior to clinch another postseason tournament appearance with a 12-8 decision in the fifth-place match over Southern Oregon's Adrian Chavez-Morales, as he became the only Corban freshman of the weekend to clinch an automatic qualifier.

Finally, senior Sven Lukner fought tooth and nail throughout the day up the consolation bracket to eventually find himself in a fifth place match, where he was narrowly defeated in sudden victory format by ERAU's Kenneth Copley. However, since the 285-weight class has six automatic qualifying spots for the CCC to hand out, Lukner was granted one final bout to earn the last qualifying spot the tournament had to offer, which he took advantage of in his final season of collegiate competition to eke out a 6-3 decision over Shane Mattson from MSU-Northern.

The Warriors will now spend the next two weeks preparing for the 2024 NAIA National Championships, where at least their five qualifiers from today will have an opportunity to compete for a national championship trophy both on an individual and team basis. The NAIA still has a handful of at-large bids to hand out to 30 total wrestlers, one from each of the ten weight classes, across the country, meaning Corban may have even more grapplers bound for Wichita that will be announced over the next week.
