Davis, Rubio Advance to Second Day of NAIA Men’s Wrestling National Championships

WICHITA, Kan. – The opening day of the 2024 NAIA Men's Wrestling National Championships saw six Warriors take to the mats in the Midwestern United States, where two of them booked second day matches with wins in both the consolation and championship brackets.

Three-time Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) champion and redshirt junior David Rubio was the lone undefeated Corban student-athlete on the day, securing a first round technical fall followed by a gritty 4-2 decision over Andreus Bond of Southeastern University to advance to the championship bracket quarterfinals. The No. 3-seeded grappler in the 157-weight class made quick work of Tyson Johnson of Dakota Wesleyan University to schedule his first ranked opponent of the trip in No. 14-seeded Bond, where Rubio utilized a second period takedown to skate by untouched and into the second day with a 2-0 record.

Sophomore Bo Davis will join Rubio on the mats tomorrow after an up-and-down opening day of his first national tournament appearance, as the Salem native shook off a first round four-point decision loss to bounce back in the consolation bracket with 10-6 and 8-6 decisions over a pair of Cumberlands University wrestlers. Davis first eliminated Elijah Griffin in the first round of consolation play before upsetting the No. 8-seeded grappler at the 141-weight class in Jared Dihn to advance even further into the tourney as the lone remaining unseeded wrestler in his class.

Fellow sophomore and 141-pounder Luke Jensen pulled off the first major upset of the weight class with a massive technical fall over No. 13-seeded Donavan Parn of Missouri Valley College but was immediately knocked down to the consolation bracket after a technical fall loss to No. 4-seeded Nicholas Yancey of Campbellsville University. A second round tech fall loss in the consolations saw Jensen's tournament appearance stop short, joining the four other Warriors who were unable to qualify for the second day of the national tourney.

Senior Sven Lukner, junior Tyson Stover, and freshman Isaiah all fell victim to first round seeded wrestlers in their respective weight classes, turned the tides in their opening consolation bracket matchup to advance, but then all faced defeat in the following round to have their seasons conclude on day one. All six Warriors to compete at nationals today won at least a single bout, resulting in 11.5 team points that had the Navy and Gold sitting in a tie for eighth place overall at the end of the first session. With the second session concluding tonight, Corban is now tied for 19th overall with Dickinson State University.
