No. 13 Warrior Men’s Wrestling Stymied on Day One of NWCA National Duals

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Warriors of the No. 13-ranked Corban University Men's Wrestling team ran into a nationally-ranked wall today to kick off the 2025 National Wrestling Coaches' Association (NWCA) National Duals event where the best of the NCAA and NAIA divisions meet in Iowa for some of the best competition they'll see during the entire regular season, as the Navy and Gold were shutout in their winner's bracket opener to No. 6-ranked Doane University at 38-0 before No. 17-ranked Missouri Valley College handed them a 26-14 loss to conclude the opening day of action.

"Today was a rough introduction to the tournament as we looked out of character in our performance," shared Warriors' head coach Nolan Harris. "Regardless of the outcome, it was good for our guys to get used to traveling, getting their weight down, and getting ready to compete against top notch competitors. While the outcome wasn't what we planned for, it served its purpose."

In only their second nationally ranked head-to-head dual of the regular season thus far, the Warriors (4-3) struggled to find any consistency in their tourney opener against the No. 6-ranked Tigers, eventually getting shutout on the team scoreboard after falling in all ten weight classes. Doane entered today's national duals with a ranked grappler in every single weight class and demonstrated their experience with ten-consecutive bout victories.

While the Tigers did secure three major wins, a technical fall, and a pin, five of the ten weight classes resulted in narrow decisions, with three of them being decided by just two points overall. Redshirt senior David Rubio suffered his first defeat since early in the 2024-25 season at 6-4 to the No. 11-ranked wrestler at 157 in Ben Miller via a 6-4 decision, while redshirt junior Antonio Garcia lost 10-8 to Doane's No. 24-ranked Eli Criblez for the closest Warriors to earn a win in their tourney opener.

It wasn't until the 149-pounders when the Navy and Gold earned their first weight class victory of the day, as sophomore Jr Downing pinned his Missouri Valley counterpart in Bryson Anderson in 4:20 to put Corban on the board and stop the MVC momentum. Rubio avenged his loss earlier in the day with a dominant 26-10 technical fall over Vikings' Makoa Goeas, yet back-to-back losses at 165 and 174 put Missouri Valley back in the driver's seat.

A hard-fought 6-0 decision by sophomore Isaiah Twait pulled the Warriors to within a 20-14 margin with two weight classes to go, yet the Vikings' nationally ranked wrestlers at 197 and 285 secured them a 26-14 dual victory and handed Corban men's wrestling their second-consecutive dual loss to start their trip to the central United States.
