No. 13 Warriors Rebound with Dual Victories Over No. 19 Oklahoma City, No. 15 Eastern Oregon

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – After an uneventful opening day of the National Wrestling Coaches' Association's (NWCA) National Duals in the central United States for the No. 13-ranked Corban University Men's Wrestling program, the Warriors rebounded with ease today at the UNI-Dome to finish the weekend 2-2 overall with a pair of ranked dual victories over No. 19-ranked Oklahoma City University, 32-9 and No. 15-ranked Eastern Oregon University.

"Today was more enjoyable and a better way to finish the tournament," Corban head coach Nolan Harris detailed earlier this afternoon. "We were able to outscore the fifteenth and nineteenth teams in the country by a margin of 77-18. Our older guys wrestled well in their matches and had great energy on the bench. Isaiah had a quality win over a top twenty opponent in the first dual and unranked Armando had an incredible win over the fifteenth ranked wrestler in his weight class. It was a good way to finish the weekend. We'll regroup and prepare for yet another dual with Eastern Oregon, where the matchups will likely be different than what we saw today which will make it an entirely different ebb and flow and atmosphere. It will undoubtedly be an exciting matchup between two top twenty teams."

With yesterday's dual losses to No. 6-ranked Doane University and No. 17-ranked Missouri Valley College firmly in the past, the Navy and Gold entered day two of the national duals with momentum provided early by junior Brayden Boyd at 125lbs, who pinned his Oklahoma City opponent of Garrett Johnson in 4:23 to provide the Warriors with an early boost.

Following junior Blake Runion's forfeit win at 133, the Stars secured their first weight class victory with a major decision at 141, yet Corban responded by winning the next three weight classes to lead 26-4 with four weight classes remaining. Sophomore Jr Downing and freshman Armando Nicacio each earned major decisions over their Oklahoma City counterparts at 149 and 165, respectively, while redshirt senior David Rubio secured the first of two pins for the two-time national runner-up in 2:56 against Stars' Hayden Brown.

A technical fall at 174 by Oklahoma City allowed them to pull within 17 team points and needing three pins to end the dual to sneak away with a victory, yet a pin by Warriors' sophomore Isaiah Twait in 6:40 clinched the dual for Corban and saw the Navy and Gold pile on the team points with an 8-0 major decision by junior Asaiah Kamplain at 197 and yet another pin on the season for redshirt junior Antonio Garcia at 285. Rubio and Twait each added NAIA Top 25 head-to-head victories in their dual with Oklahoma City.

In their first dual matchup of the 2024-25 season with fellow Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) member Eastern Oregon University, the Warriors brought their best efforts and provided the Mountaineers with an early sneak peek at what their upcoming dual in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center has to offer today in Cedar Falls.

Despite dropping the opening weight class to EOU, Corban clapped back with seven-straight weight class victories, including a pair of pins for junior Bo Davis and Rubio, a forfeit victory at 184, a technical fall for Runion, and three narrow decisions that Downing, Nicacio, and senior Tyson Stover duked out against one of their conference rivals to steamroll the Mounties in Iowa.

Despite Kamplain allowing a sudden victory to Eastern Oregon's Eric Karas at 197lbs via an overtime period, Garcia concluded the Warriors' first ever appearance at the NWCA Duals with a 5-0 decision over EOU's No. 15-ranked Darian Hoobery for Corban's second Top 25 victory against the Mountaineers, with Nicacio handing No. 15-ranked Michael Fox a last second loss at 165.
